The Sixth Regiment of Foot at Lower Fort Garry
by William R. Morrison
Conclusions
The Sixth Regiment of Foot played no spectacular part
in the history of western Canada. The danger for which it was hastily
transported across 2,000 miles of ocean and muskeg proved to be
illusory; the attack against which it stood guard never came. Yet it
provided an object lesson for those who cared to learn that Great
Britain in 1846 was still ready and able to defend her colonies, even
the weak and isolated one far away on the banks of the Red River.
